Eh, just an interesting quick thought for today.

So the last time I had, had a Mac was way back with system 6. I’ve used everything up to OS X since then but haven’t actually owned a mac since back then. So it’s the older style MacBook Air 11″ screen. The one with the core 2 and no backlit screen. I hate that I can’t fix anything if it goes wrong, the Ram is non replaceable or upgradable. internal battery, and so on, but in all honesty this seems like with lion it will be the perfect supplicant for my mobile computing needs. In the end will the few pro’s outweigh the many costs? I’ll have to wait and see on that one, its a gamble.

So I keep seeing a new trend in the regular media where they’re getting “Experts” on ITSec talking about the new group Lulzsec. The same rhetoric seems to keep coming out about them being a bunch of kids, having no skill, using simple methods and trying to discredit them. Some of what they are saying is true but what everyone out there is failing to realize, or maybe not, maybe they’re just trying to misdirect the attention as usual to simply hide the elephant in the room under a tablecloth.

Taking down a website isn’t extremely hard one way or another, but most people don’t realize that so nobody does anything to take extra precautions. Think about it for example: Amazon.com get’s taken out for an hour, what’s that equate to in lost revenue? or a bank of telephone numbers used for processing cc transactions for small business gets hit with a continual stream of 1000 phone calls, or an 911 system getting hit similarly. Those are fairly unsophisticated attacks.

There is a lot of insecurity on the internet that a blind eye gets turned to because normal folks just don’t know about it.

This group of people from lulzsec I know I’m not alone in the IT world getting a bit of hoot from them because they’re out there not going after intricate attacks they’re just smashing crap with a hammer and showing it to the world.

So all they did was throw a rock at a glass house, guess what? your now out a house and have to spend the $$$ to build a new one, which you’ll probably make out of glass again cause people don’t learn anything.

So this could very well be the creation of a hugely successful fourth player in the Smartphone market. Also it can be a saving grace into Nokia and Microsoft.

If it’s true that there will be talks of a buyout of Nokia’s Mobile Division by Microsoft and if the deal goes through this could be pretty game changing as it would first benefit Nokia who’s been going downhill in the smartphone wars with Symbian taking a crash dive. Then it would give Microsoft and introduction into building its own specific handsets which would control the specs of phones and insure a Windows Phone that shouldn’t crash and lag out due to hardware / software integration issues.

So let’s see how this would play out.

Android (Pros)

Linux

Tons of Apps

Search Integration

Integration with various clouds but seamless integration with Google cloud.

Open carrier availability

Android (Cons)

No hardware control allows for bad companies to make bad phones with the Google name leading to brand dilution and different user experiences

So far there have been DRM issues blocking certain streaming content

iOS (Pros)

iOS – Mac

Tons of Apps

Fashionable

Well Marketed

Extremely easy to use interface

Seamless integration with iCloud

Hardware control keeping brand integrity and insuring a predictable and controlled user experience

iOS (Cons)

Restrictive customization (This could be seen as a pro in some instances)

Some issues in communicating with other services

Windows Phone (Pros) *Assuming acquisition of Nokia Mobile

Easy to use interface

Apps selection is growing steadily

Search Integration with Bing

Seamless integration with anything Microsoft (Office, Exchange, Outlook, Skydrive, Azure, Win7 etc.) You know the stuff 90% of people’s lives are interacting with.

Hardware control keeping brand integrity or in this case helping to rebuild it and control on the user experience assuming they would pull licenses or restrict licensing to bad phones.

LIVE integration

Windows Phone (Cons) *Assuming acquisition of Nokia Mobile

It’s Microsoft, they’re known for things messing up.

They will most likely try and restrict things outside of their control

Now I’m not trying to be a fanboy of Microsoft or anything like that but with past experiences with WP 5, 6, 7 and even dating back to Windows CE they’ve had issues to overcome and have greatly succeeded in some aspects with WP7 but still seem to be in the learning phase in the market. I think they are correct in still trying to buy in as mobile usage is going to be a huge revenue platform and I think they don’t have anything to lose except money at this point. Their biggest hurdle is still going to be regaining trust especially in the US market where people are not trying to be stuck for 2 years with a bad phone.

Also I didn’t mention RIM or Blackberry in the list as I’m still trying to figure out if they are really going to embrace the consumer world. Sure they play in it a bit and I love blackberry especially from a business and management standpoint. It was hard for me to pass up on getting a Torch just because I love the devices but they are still not at the point to make life easy for the average consumer, just the tech junkies / business people.
